Tuned overtones lend added richness. Double duplex scaling is engineered into all Steigerman Premium Grand pianos. The purpose of duplex scaling, an innovation patented in 1872 by Theodore Steinway, is to allow the non-speaking portion of the string (located between the non-speaking bridge pin and the hitch pin) to resonate in sympathy with the vibrating portion of the string. This adds tuned overtones, sustain and color to the sound of the piano. Double duplex scaling is a common feature of the world's finest pianos.
